Korea eSIM: Calls, SMS and Identity Checks
A Korea eSIM can connect your phone to the internet without doing everything a Korean phone number can do. If you are flying from Japan and need a restaurant callback, a text message or an account verification code, check those tasks separately before choosing a plan. A working map does not prove that a booking service will accept your number.
We checked the relevant Polaris eSIM offers on 14 October 2026. The useful comparison is between individual contracts, including their unknown fields. Local Network describes the data route; it does not automatically include voice calls, SMS or a number suitable for identity verification.
Separate data, calls, messages and identity
Mobile data lets apps exchange information. Carrier voice calls use the calling service attached to a line. Ordinary SMS arrives at the number addressed by the sender. Identity verification adds another requirement: the service must accept the subscriber and the kind of number presented. These are different capabilities, even when one phone handles all of them.
For your Korea eSIM, write down the task you actually need. Receiving a hotel call is different from calling a restaurant, and receiving an ordinary message is different from completing a resident identity check. An app may also have its own registration rules. Do not assume that internet access, a Korean IP address or passport verification will satisfy those rules.
Compare the actual Korea eSIM contract
| Checked Korea offer | Incoming calls | Incoming SMS | Outgoing calls / SMS | Passport KYC | Included number |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SKT Local Network unlimited, 3 days | After KYC | After KYC | Not included | Required for receiving | Unconfirmed |
| LG U+ Local Network unlimited, 3 days | No | No | No | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed |
| Roaming unlimited, 3 days | No | No | No | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed |
| Roaming total 5GB or 10GB, 30 days | Unconfirmed | No | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed |
This table describes selected offers, not every SKT, LG U+ or Roaming product. The SKT receiving functions require passport KYC; outgoing calls and texts are not included in that Polaris offer. The checked LG U+ and unlimited Roaming offers do not support the listed calling or messaging functions. For the total-data offers, incoming SMS is unsupported, while the other unknown functions remain unconfirmed.
Compare the individual SKT and LG U+ options in the Local Network product, then check the selected carrier and duration. You can compare those offers on the Korea plans page. The total-data product includes checked 5GB and 10GB options with a 30-day validity period that starts on first use. Choosing total data is a straightforward starting point when maps and messaging apps are your main needs. It does not add a voice or SMS entitlement.
Unconfirmed does not mean an included 010 number
A Korea eSIM label or an operator name is not enough to establish whether you receive a usable Korean phone number. The included-number field for the compared offers is unconfirmed. That is neither a promise that a Korean 010 number is supplied nor proof that no number exists. Ask about the exact option before buying if receiving a call is essential to your trip.
Useful questions are whether a number is supplied, how it is obtained, when receiving service becomes available and which documents are required. Request confirmation for the offer you intend to purchase, rather than transferring instructions from another carrier product. If you must make conventional outgoing calls, arrange a contract explicitly covering them before departure.
Passport KYC is different from personal authentication
Passport KYC can enable a contracted visitor service. It does not establish that every Korean app will treat you as an eligible subscriber for personal authentication. The SKT direct All product allows separately credited outgoing service but excludes texts for personal authentication and payments. That direct product is background information, not the contract for a Polaris SKU.
For the checked Polaris SKT option, use its own incoming-only terms. Do not import SKT direct-store calling credit, installation deadlines, prices, speed claims or refund conditions into this offer. If a booking or payment service requests identity authentication, read that service's requirements and prepare an accepted alternative. Receiving ordinary SMS alone does not guarantee that the requested verification will work.
Keep the Japanese number on its own line
Your Korea eSIM cannot take over messages sent to your Japanese mobile number. Keeping the Japanese line enabled and turning off that line's data roaming are separate decisions. Calls and SMS abroad still depend on the Japanese carrier, your subscription and applicable charges; receiving a bank code is not guaranteed by a travel-data provider.
docomo's data-roaming guidance distinguishes mobile-data restrictions from voice and SMS services. Check your own carrier before leaving Japan, even if it is not docomo. Test a noncritical login, keep an available recovery method and avoid relying on a single phone for every account recovery step.
Set the data line without disabling the wrong service
Apple's Dual SIM guidance explains that an iPhone uses one cellular-data network at a time. Choose the travel line for mobile data and consider whether automatic data switching could move usage to the Japanese line. Compatible SIM combinations vary by device; using different carriers also requires an unlocked phone.
Before departure, check your actual Japanese-market phone and its eSIM compatibility. Name the two lines clearly, save the purchased option and its activation instructions, and install with a stable internet connection. After arrival, follow the delivery instructions for the travel line's roaming switch. A data-roaming switch does not grant voice, SMS or identity rights.
Use three separate checks after arrival
First open an ordinary webpage with Wi-Fi off to check travel data. If it fails, examine the selected data line, destination coverage and supplied settings before changing the Japanese line. Next check any contracted receiving service after completing its required verification. Finally test the specific app or account process; a working webpage cannot confirm its identity rules.
If a message is missing, identify the number it was sent to. Messages addressed to Japan belong to the Japanese line, while an eligible Korean receiving service has its own contract and verification path. Keep the eSIM profile installed during troubleshooting and describe the failed task precisely when asking for help. Choose a Korea eSIM by the capabilities you can confirm, and keep a fallback for everything still unknown.
